Characteristics of the Mexican Stud PokerThe standard five-card stud poker has a group of poker variants that is given a Latino name, the Mexican Stud poker. Other names for this group of poker variants are simply Mexican Poker or uniquely Stud Loco. The first unique characteristic of the Mexican Stud poker is that the deck of cards used has been stripped of certain cards, and there are assigned wild cards. One particular Mexican Stud poker variant is the one which is widely played in Casino San Pablo. This casino is located in northern California. Based on the rules implemented by the Casino San Pablo, the deck of cards is stripped with the 8s, the 9s, and the 10s. Then one joker is added to the deck. As a result, the deck of cards that will be used for the Mexican Stud poker is composed only of 41 cards. With such a lesser number, certain probabilities and odds that have been applied in other stud poker games no longer applies in the Mexican Stud poker. For example, there will be no straights involving the cards that were removed, such as 7-8-9-10-J. With the absence of the 8s, 9s, and 10s from the deck, the sequence of cards such as 5-6-7-J-Q is considered as straight. The ranking of hands will also have a variation in Mexican Stud poker. For example, a flush is considered higher in rank than a full house. This is because the percentage of getting a flush is lesser than the percentage of getting a full house. With some of the cards removed, getting cards of the same suit is more difficult that getting cards of the same value. The joker placed in the deck of cards plays a dual role. That is, the joker is considered a bug if it is face-up. And the joker is considered fully wild if it is face-down. To play the Mexican Stud poker or the Stud Loco, the poker players utilize the rules of the five-card stud choose-before roll your own. The antes that must be placed by poker players are usually high. This means that Mexican Stud poker cannot be played by gamblers with a rather limited bankroll. The bring-in is paid by the poker player who holds the high card during the first round. The rules described above are the specific ones for the variant of Mexican Stud which is played at the Casino San Pablo. There are other variants of this particular poker game. For example, there is one variant named Shifting sands. In this poker variant, the modification lies in the assignment of wild cards. The joker is not the only wild card. The hole card held by each player, and all other cards of the same rank are considered as wild card, but for the particular poker player only. |
