If a casino player has experienced playing poker in various casinos and gambling houses, he will find that there are three basic types based on the structure of the game, or how the game is played. These three basic types are known as the “Draw Poker”, the “Lowball Poker”, and the “Razz Poker”. Each of them has its own distinct rules.

Draw Poker

This type of poker is known as the simplest of all types of poker games. It is sometimes called the “Five Card Draw”, especially in wild Wild West movies. Since this game is featured in famous western movies, people who don’t play poker are quite familiar with some aspects of Draw poker.

The usual way of playing Draw poker is done with two rounds of betting. The first round is done before the draw, while the second round of betting is done after the draw. There is also an ante and a dealer button. The ante is the money placed in the pot before any hand is played. The dealer button is simply a small disk that is passed from one player to another to indicate who among the players is supposed to play.

The Draw poker has two known variances. The first variance is called “Draw High” in which the highest or strongest hand gets the pot. And the second variance is called the “Jacks or Better” in which there must be a pair of Jacks first before the player can open the pot.

Lowball Poker

The Lowball poker is similar to the “Five Card Draw”, but the ranking of hands is reversed. That is, the lowest hand, which is considered the weakest in Draw poker, becomes the strongest hand in Lowball. This means that the strongest hand is composed of Five, Four, Three, Two, and Ace. This combination is called the five-high wheel.

Like the Draw poker, the Lowball has a variance known as “Deuce to Seven”. In this variance, the Ace is considered a high card. This means that the strongest hand is composed of the Two, Three, Four, Five, and Seven. This strongest hand does not include the Six card. With this variance of Lowball, poker players use the No Limit betting rules.

Razz Poker

The Razz poker is similar to the regular Lowball in which the Aces are played low. But it is a Seven Card stud, in which each poker player is dealt with either a down card or an up card. The down card is dealt faced down while the up card is dealt faced up.

Each poker player has his own preferences. Some liked the traditional Draw poker, while others liked the different challenge of Lowball. Others may not want to play Razz because they view it as too simple and mechanical. Yet, this game is still played in poker tournaments.
